Edward Palmer, 1829-1911

Botanist -- Plant Collector

Portrait Edward Palmer

Naturalist/scientist/army surgeon. Collected flora and fauna specimens for private collectors and the Smithsonian. Plant varieties named palmerii are named for him. First white man to visit Montezuma's Cave and parts of Baja. Biography in "Plants in His Pack" by Janice Beaty and a more adult work by McVaugh.

At 21 he was a personal assistant to Taylor, former Representative from Ohio and Speaker of the House.

Enlisted in the Union army in April 1861. Assigned as volunteer surgeon in the 2nd Colorado Regiment under Col. J.H. Leavenworth, reporting to Denver in June.
