Ethel and Fred Mountford with their three sons and first daughter. Three more girls were to be born into the family -- Janet, Susan and Marjorie.

The family was living on Harrison Street in Newell, Hancock County, WV. Fred worked at Edwin M. Knowles as a gilder -- the person who applied the gold or platinum band on the edges of plates and cups and the line down the handle of the cup.
